If Humans Descended From Apes, Then Where Did Apes Come From?

Under almost every article and video about human evolution, you can find comments from people who doubt whether something like evolution even exists. One question comes up again and again: if humans descended from apes, then where did apes come from? Not everyone who asks probably expects an answer, but the question itself is a fair one. Our knowledge of the origins of our simian ancestors is still full of gaps, but from the pieces of the puzzle gathered so far, a far-from-obvious story emerges.
It has more twists, turns, and varied threads than the story of human origins – the one about the ape that came down from the tree, made its way onto the savanna, and started walking on two legs.
